Wasau Window and Wall Systems lunch & learn

The program started with a quick overview of various generic curtain
wall and storefront systems

Blast mitigation
http://www.gsa.gov/portal/category/21060 GSA uses ISC instead of the
UFC that the DoD uses.

Thermal efficiency - non thermally broken systems will soon be a thing
of the past

If you have more metal on the interior, condensation may actually be
less because the metal absorbs building heat.

Warm edge spacers e.g. stainless steel may cost apprx 5% more cost for
the IGUs (not 5% of framing and glazing, just the glazing)

Argon dissipates over time. Krypton is high $.

Energy Star should not be used in fenestration for commercial projects

Dynamic glass - tint adjusts by electronic current (Soladigm)

Q: what roller wave distortion limits are achievable.
A: Kevin will email me Viracon's tolerances.

Q: Do integral blinds increase condensation?
A: Require a thermal analysis including indoor and outdoor temps and
RH. Mfrs do have this data.

Q: Do you offer fluorosurfactant free (FSF free) Kynar coating?
A: Kevin will check with coating supplier

Q: Which fenestration labeling does Wasau use for ASHRAE 90.1:
permanent mfr nameplate with u-factor and SHGC, or NFRC labeling
A: NFRC labeling

Discussion:
Acrylic-based solid surfaces (as opposed to polyester) may be easier to repair and to form. May be Class A material.

CENTRIA wall performance educational program - day 2 - and coil coating plant tour
This was a product specific program and may not qualify for some of my various certifications' CEU requirements, but just in case, the program was at Brickworks Dr, Leetsdale, PA...

...and the Ambridge coating plant.
...and a contact

What a view and a fun ride at the Incline. Nice shot of our group.

CENTRIA MetalWrap insulated backup panel system

CENTRIA MetalWrap - Simplified design and installation.

Complete manufactured wall system, with testing of FULL ASSEMBLY for air/water/structural performance, and like their other systems, assembly fire testing per NFPA 285 (except they are still working on that for terra cotta because there are so many products - and I suspect they're not getting requests every day for that).

3 versions depending on cladding: metal panel, brick, terra cotta rain screen (series 100, 200, 300).

See detail packages which include foundation, floor slabs, roof parapets, window sill/head/jamb, inside and outside corners, joints, penetrations, and end wall. Details have been reviewed by third-party masonry and envelope technical experts like Wiss Janney Elstner.

R-22 in 3" for the wall. Can be glazed as a unit assembly in the factory.

Several profiles of aluminum windows by CENTRIA, can be used as ribbon windows or punched openings. They offer compatible sunshades and louvers made by C/S Group (Construction Specialties, Inc.)

CENTRIA MetalWrap

MetalWrap - a backup system that functions also as an air barrier, can be clad with their standard profiles of either metal panels, brick veener, or terra cotta.

Thermal gasket. You can have in any color you like as long as it's black. Actually they can special order colors if you have at least a few thousand ln ft.

CENTRIA Wall Performance Symposium

Foam panels are cradle to cradle certified, and nearly all their products are.

Life Cycle Assessment reports are available.

Wall system R-values are expected to increase for 2012 supplement to
ASHRAE 90.1. There was no change from 2007 to 2010.

CENTRIA has offered Formabond composite wall panels for about 5 years
now (comparable to Alucabond, Reynobond, etc).

Codes have started to require continuous insulation (outboard of the
studs) depending on adoption by state and local authorities. There is
still some potential debate with AHJ's whether "foamed in place"
(during fabrication -- I like how MasterSpec clarifies that, thanks
Joe!) panels constitute continuous insulation because there are joints
around each panel, but CENTRIA is happy to demonstrate modeling and
thermal imaging data for anyone who is concerned. If in doubt check
with AHJ.

Foam plastic insulation like XPS can have issues contributing to a
fire in an exterior wall assembly such as those that are clad with
metal composite panels. Meeting NFPA 285 with the core material is not
enough, needs to be the complete assembly. Chapter 26 is often
misinterpreted. There is a proposal to clarify this in the 2012 IBC in
Section 1403 to require testing of full assemblies. That would require
expensive testing and it would take some time before the "catalogue"
of tested assemblies allows for much creativity.

ASHRAE 2010 - Air barriers must be continuous and meet pressure
differentials including stack effect.
